Geotechnology has assisted many clients, particularly local authorities and the Environment Agency to deal with the legacy of old, abandoned or problematic landfills. Often the restoration schemes have been devised after an understanding of the site has been developed by site investigation. Risk assessment work defines the restoration objectives leading to a detailed design, which might result in capping, gas extraction, leachate drainage and collection or simply agricultural restoration.
The practice has carried out a number of particularly challenging restoration schemes, including the restoration of a hot aluminium waste landfill for the Environment Agency and major closed landfills for various local authorities. Complex gas emissions have been assessed as part of the design of restoration schemes to track gases passing through various natural strata.
